Dogs Friends started in the Spring of 2005. This was because we were all doing work with different dog welfare groups. We recognised the need for funds to be raised, but didn’t want to be directly affiliated with any particular group to retain our flexibility. Over the time since then our priorities have changed and our interests have become more defined. We are hoping to do more direct rehoming work, and as that happens more of the money raised will be used by us on the dogs who come direct to us for rehoming. All of the items donated to us – such as food, blankets, toys, doggy equipment – will be used on the rescued dogs passing through our care. Since the end of 2006 we have been receiving dogs for rehoming who might otherwise slip through the rescue net. Quite often these dogs are on the very brink of being put to sleep – not because they have done anything wrong, but because of a lack of alternative options. Dogs Friends is helped & supported by NASSL which is a registered charity.
Dogsfriends only exists because of the huge amount of effort and support that people give it. Such is given because we care passionately about dogs. We can’t help all of them, but we do what we can. So the biggest thanks to all who have so generously supported Dogs Friends efforts to date. You truly are a friend of the dogs.
Please note most of our dogs are in foster homes dotted around North Somerset, Clevedon, Cheddar, Yate, Dorset and Bristol. Unfortunately we don't always have enough foster spaces to place dogs in, if this is the case they get boarded at our expense in Whitehouse kennels near Weston Super Mare. For some of these dogs it really is their last chance and so rather than turn them away to be put down, we hold them in kennels until we have a space with a fosterer for them. We also hold last chance dogs for CARA (please see links page) at the kennels. It is an expensive thing to do but we feel that the dogs lives are worth it. We can only pay for spaces for as long as we have funds to do so, which is why it is so important to us to keep fundraising etc. Every pound counts and every pound helps save the lives of dogs often rejected by other charities and organisations, dogs that really have no place left to go!
